Abstract

The fourth essay in the ``Situational Awareness’’ series argues that as the race to AGI intensifies the national security state will get involved and that, by around 2027 or 2028, the U.S. government will launch some form of Manhattan-style national project on superintelligence. Aschenbrenner contends that no startup can safely handle a technology that will be decisively militarily consequential, that private labs cannot secure model weights against determined state adversaries such as the CCP, and that consolidating the frontier effort under a government-led program is the only realistic path to developing superintelligence responsibly.
