Utilitarianism and expected utility
Journal of philosophy, vol. 84, no. 8, 1987, pp. 405–422
Abstract
A theorem of economics, suitably reinterpreted, purports to show that general good is the sum of the good of individuals. This paper explains the theorem and its reinterpretation. Then it examines how far the theorem can really be used to support its apparently utilitarian conclusion. In particular, the paper examines what conclusion can be drawn from the theorem about the value of equality in the distribution of good.
