Fundamental axioms for preference relations
Synthese, vol. 18, no. 4, 1968, pp. 423–442
Abstract
This article discusses the axioms for preference relations as developed by hallden, von wright, chisholm and sosa and others, especially axioms expressing distributive properties with respect to disjunction. several such axioms are examined and some of their consequences proved. it is argued that the consequences are too peculiar to be considered compatible with the intended interpretation. therefore preference is distributive with respect to disjunction only in very restricted contexts (if ever).
