Employee Tenure Summary - 2022 A01 Results
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, July 22, 2022
Abstract
In January 2022, the median number of years that wage and salary workers had been with their current employer remained unchanged from the January 2020 median, at 4.1 years. The median tenure for men was 4.3 years, while the median for women was 3.8 years. Median tenure was generally higher among older workers than younger ones, and longer tenures were more common among Whites than other racial and ethnic groups. Younger workers were more likely to have shorter tenures than older workers, and those with less than a high school diploma had lower median tenure than those with more education. Workers in the public sector had a higher median tenure than those in the private sector, reflecting, in part, differences in age distribution. Among major private industries, manufacturing had the highest median tenure, while leisure and hospitality had the lowest. Management, professional, and related occupations had the highest median tenure, while service occupations had the lowest. – AI-generated abstract
