Individuation by acquaintance and by stipulation
The Philosophical Review, vol. 92, no. 1, 1983, pp. 3
Abstract
Hintikka has demonstrated the importance of cross-Identification by acquaintance, In which individuals that figure in alternative possibilities are united by likeness in their relations to a subject of attitudes. This requires prior cross-Identification of the subject, Which cannot be either by acquaintance or by description. The problem is solved if we take the alternatives not as possible worlds but as possible individuals situated in worlds.
