Request for proposals on extreme power concentration

Abstract

Longview Philanthropy is looking to fund proposals to better understand and reduce the risk of AI enabling the extreme concentration of power—the possibility that AI will enable a small group of people to gain durable control over the lives of everyone else. Funding is offered across two tracks: grants for projects, programs, new teams, and new organizations (typically $100K–$2M/yr), and career funding for individuals developing or transitioning skills into the area. The request sets out the threat models—coalition substitution and institutional capture, exclusive access to frontier capabilities, and models with singular or secret loyalties—and twelve priority areas, including foundational research, situation monitoring, AI integrity and secret loyalties, frontier company policies, law-following AI, oversight of AI in government, autonomous weapons, mass surveillance, political economy, AI tools to empower citizens, building compute in democracies, and field-building. The application deadline was 2 July 2026 and the round is now closed.
