A career review of roles working on AI policy inside the US federal government — likely, on the authors’ view, the world’s single most consequential AI regulator over the next decade. The article lays out why the work matters, the skills and experience that fit, and the potential downsides — including burnout and the risk of inadvertently making things worse. It surveys key organizations across the executive branch and Congress and suggests concrete pathways for entering the field.
