Modelling the value of existential risk reduction

Abstract

Several people have argued that reducing existential risk is of overwhelming moral importance. However, there is a simple and natural model of the value of existential risk reduction on which it comes out to be large, but not overwhelming. I present this model and use it to show what assumptions would be necessary for the value of existential risk reduction to become truly vast.
