Abstract
THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE MASS MEDIA AS AN INSTRUMENT OF SOCIAL MANIPULATION WHICH SERVES THE INTERESTS OF THE POWERFUL. IT EXPLORES THE IDEAS BROUGHT FORTH IN A BOOK CALLED “MANUFACTURING WITH CONSENT BY NORM CHOMSKY AND EDWARD S. HERMAN. THEIR ANALYSIS ACCUSES THE MEDIA OF SERVING SPECIAL, POWERFUL INTERESTS AND OUTLINE A “PROPAGANDA MODEL” AND DEMONSTRATES WITH MANY EXAMPLES THAT, FOR THE MOST PART, THE U.S. MEDIA FULFILL THE EXPECTATIONS OF THAT PROPAGANDA.
