Smoking in the developing world
80,000 Hours, 2016
Abstract
Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where nearly 80% of the world’s more than one billion smokers live. Despite this, smoking rates are rising in many developing countries due to population growth and aggressive marketing by the tobacco industry. There are proven interventions to reduce smoking rates, such as taxation, smoke-free policies, and public awareness campaigns. However, implementation of these interventions is often lacking in developing countries. – AI-generated abstracts
